Iranian Foreign Minister Decries US Attacks on Nuclear Sites
He cautioned that continued diplomatic engagement may now be unattainable.
Araghchi characterized the latest US military strikes on Iran as an “outrageous, grave, and unprecedented violation of fundamental principles of the Charter of the UN and international law.”
He strongly criticized the attacks, emphasizing their severity and illegality under global standards.
“Iran condemns in the strongest terms the US brutal military aggression against Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities,” he asserted, reinforcing Tehran’s position that its atomic program serves non-military purposes.
The minister reiterated Iran’s resolve to protect its land and independence through all necessary measures, not only in the face of “US military aggression,” but also against “Israel's unlawful actions.”
Araghchi emphasized that the Islamic Republic would not remain passive in the face of foreign hostility.
He also dismissed current appeals to resume negotiations, calling them “irrelevant.” According to him, diplomatic efforts were already underway when the attacks occurred.
“We were in the middle of talks with the US when Israelis blow it up. And again, we were in the middle of talks, and negotiations with Europeans happened only two days ago in Geneva. This time, Americans decided to blow it up,” Araghchi stated.
He further criticized Israel's involvement, referring to the German chancellor's remark about Israel carrying out “a dirty job.”
He added, “They supported that dirty job, it's a shame,” condemning both the act and those who backed it.
Araghchi concluded by questioning the credibility of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), insisting that even though Iran had fully complied with its terms, it had failed to shield the country.
“Why countries pursuing peaceful nuclear energy should rely on the treaty?” he asked, casting doubt on the effectiveness of global non-proliferation agreements.
